Tourism Remains Strong in the DR

The Dominican Republic expects 4.8 Million tourists by the end of 2021, though still far from the 6 million arrivals recorded in 2019 before the pandemic, according to details recently revealed by the Minister of Tourism David Collado.

In August 2021 alone, 476,575 non-residents arrived in the Dominican Republic, a figure close to August 2019 (497,390 tourists).

“We are going to close the year at 4,840,376 [tourists], a number that we never imagined we would be able to reach in 2021. These are clear signs that tourism is recovering in a sustainable way in the Dominican Republic,” said Collado in his statement.

That’s the highest number of any Caribbean destination this year.

Real Estate Market Remains Strong

"What I’m hearing now is an uptick in inquiries about the second home market,” said Anders Bogebjerg, owner of local real estate firm Group Palmera. “Interest really hasn’t slowed down with COVID. A lot of people are asking, especially from New York Area and Florida.”

Barbara Warren of Noval Properties said that the pandemic actually did the contrary. “There has been a boom in residential [investment] due to the [coronavirus pandemic] and the fear of large crowds,” Warren revealed. “There has been a significant uptick in sales of turnkey-ready properties.”

These claims were supported by Lucien Echavarria, director at the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic. “Interest in real estate in the Dominican Republic remains high because smart investors know the DR is the type of destination travelers are looking for now,” said Echavarria. “It is close to the U.S. and has a strong, stable government.”

The Dominican Republic’s residential property market has grown rapidly in recent years, thanks to robust tourism growth and the arrival of luxury international and boutique hotels, coupled with strong economic fundamentals.

Foreigners are further encouraged by a strong economy, stable government, improving infrastructure, and easy access via its three international airports. In 2019, the economy grew by a healthy 5.1% from a year earlier, following expansions of 7% in 2018, 4.7% in 2017, 6.7% in 2016, 6.9% in 2015, 7.1% in 2014 and 4.9% in 2013. However, due to the pandemic, the economy is projected to contract this year by 6% before bouncing back with a 4% growth in 2021, according to the IMF.

A New Home Away from Home

People are more interested in leaving cities and relocating to a gated community in the Caribbean, so local home sales are garnering increased interest.

“A revealing fact in the context of the shutdown of tourist visits due to the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, is that the demand for a second home in the DR by foreign investors in need of a safe and comfortable space has increased, in addition to their residences in their home countries” stated Frank Rainieri, President Punta Cana Group at the VI virtual conference of the Dominican Association of Tourist Press (ADOMPRETUR).

The Dominican Republic provides an excellent option for a full-time residence, with safe and first-world facilities including international schools and medical care.

Tourism is Strong in the Dominican Republic

Travelers are vacationing in the Dominican Republican in increasing numbers, and are receiving a warm reception. “As people return to travel, socially distant activities taking place in our beautiful, big open National Parks and long beaches are particularly appealing. It’s also a very safe and welcoming country, which is always a key consideration for travelers,” says David Collado, Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic.

In fact, the Dominican Republic has the highest rate of visitors than the rest of its Caribbean-island neighbors. As a result of stringent safety measures and an effective vaccination plan, hotel occupancy has increased to 70 percent, further solidifying the Dominican Republic as a world example of tourism recovery amidst the pandemic.

Dominican Republic Vaccination Plan

A COVID-19 vaccination plan is currently underway and the country aims to vaccinate 7.8 million adults (out of a population of 10.8 million) by the end of 2021. The Dominican Republic is only behind Chile, USA, Uruguay, and Canada in vaccinated per 100,000 inhabitants. The government aspires to maintain a pace of 100,000+ vaccinations a day.

100% of the Tourism sector personnel (hotels, airports, restaurants, transportation, etc.) have been vaccinated. All our personnel in guest services at Hispaniola Real Estate has been vaccinated.

New Travel Requirements – Mandatory E-Ticket, Airport Procedures

All foreign and Dominican passengers entering or leaving the Dominican Republic on commercial flights must complete the electronic entry and exit form, which combines the Traveler’s Health Affidavit, Customs Declaration, and International Embarkation/Disembarkation forms. The form is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Russian and can be accessed through this link.

Entry Requirements: Airports and other ports of entry will randomly select passengers to perform quick, aleatory breath tests to between 3% and 15% of arrivals, and to anyone that may present symptoms of COVID-19. Passengers under the age of five and crew members are exempt from this procedure.

Passengers who present a vaccination card and/or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival in the Dominican Republic will be exempted from the random test.

All passengers will need to perform a temperature check. Passengers who present symptoms or whose test results are positive will be isolated and attended at authorized locations. Prior to departure, travelers should confirm with their airline provider and airport of origin regarding any testing or other related requirements for inbound flights to the Dominican Republic, or necessary requirements needed upon arrival to their country of origin.

The Dominican Republic Health Protocols

The well-being and safety of visitors remain a priority, and the Ministry of Tourism will continue to work in coordination with the other relevant authorities to further strengthen the country’s preventive measures against coronavirus. The Dominican Republic has a robust health care system that has been able to quickly detect cases of COVID-19 in the country, and testing is readily available. For more information visit this website.

Masks in Indoor Public Spaces

It is mandatory to keep social distancing and to wear face masks in all public spaces, such as banks, supermarkets, and offices, among others.

Large events and public gatherings are currently not permitted, and some restrictions on restaurant capacity are applied.

COVID-19 Testing

Regarding Covid-19 testing in the Dominican Republic, private labs have special facilities for those requiring results in time for travel abroad. Results of PCR tests can be had in 24 hours for those presenting a valid airline ticket at Referencia Lab branches in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Romana, and Punta Cana. Antigen test results can be had in three hours at Referencia and Amadita labs in the same locations. Nevertheless, travelers are recommended to make plans with extra time. PCR test results are usually given in 24 hours or less online.

Vacation in an Outdoor Paradise

The numerous beaches, watersports, and leisure activities available are plentiful in the Dominican Republic. Warm, sunny weather allows for spending time outdoors in the fresh air, enjoying your vacation in our tropical paradise.

Discover the Spectacular Sunsets of the North Coast, Dominican Republic

"It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream." - Bernard Williams

We invite you to experience one of the most spectacular nature shows on the Dominican Republic’s north coast. The sunsets in the Summer are particularly vibrant, creating a memorable experience to behold.

Every evening, the candy-colored skies light up and sparkle over the beach, stretching as far as the eye can see against the iridescent turquoise waters. With many hours of daylight, you will have plenty of time to enjoy a full day and evening of balmy, warm weather and tropical fun.

At the summer solstice, the Sun rises as far to the northeast as it ever does, and sets as far to the northwest. Every day after that, the Sun rises a little bit further south. At the fall equinox, the Sun rises due east and sets due west.

The times of sunrise and sunset in the Dominican Republic are influenced by the country's moderate northern position in the hemisphere, similar to the United States.

With several prime sunset viewing places in our area, such as Sosua Bay, Playa Alicia, and Hispaniola Beach we recommend you visit and enjoy this truly wonderous spectacle.

Dominican Republic Holiday Traditions

The Magic of the holiday season is upon us with a festive and special time, bringing magic to be shared and enjoyed in this lovely tropical paradise. Christmas is a major holiday in the Dominican Republic and elaborate light displays can be found throughout the island, in outdoor parks which provide a gathering place to enjoy time together.

Christmas Eve in the Dominican Republic is known as La Noche Buena (the “Good Night”). On La Noche Buena, Dominicans often gather for a big family feast, with traditional food and drinks, and beloved Christmas music and of course, dancing.

Three Kings Day is celebrated in the Dominican Republic as well, and commemorates the day (according to the Bible) that the three wise men visited baby Jesus after travelling across the desert for twelve days, and bringing him prophetic gifts. Three Kings Day is the prominent gift-giving holiday in the DR.

Christmas is a time to give and therefore it is also a Dominican tradition to exchange “Angelitos” between friends, co-workers and family – a tradition we know as “Secret Santa.”

One of the main and most special Christmas traditions in the Dominican Republic is the Christmas Eve Dinner, celebrated with homemade Dominican food. Although some ingredients tend to vary within different regions.

New Year’s Eve is celebrated with festive parties and a countdown to midnight. Reunion feasts and large meals with friends and family for Christmas and New Years are the main activities for the holidays. Food such as roast chicken and pork are often served, along with traditional holiday items such as Pasteles en Hoja. Rum, wine and Mamajuana are served with dinner, with plenty of sweets for dessert.

This is how we celebrate Christmas in the Dominican Republic! Feliz Navidad.

Socially distant travel: Safe Vacations during COVID-19

In considering whether or not to travel this year, the main factors to consider are the likelihood you'll encounter other people, the number and length of such encounters, and whether the location and region are experiencing high rates of infection.

Vacation rentals are a preferred choice over hotels since they come with fewer person-to-person interactions. While hotels are working diligently to keep their spaces clean and sanitized, private home renatals provide a huge advantage given that the renter is generally the only one occupying the property.

If you heed expert advice, take necessary precautions, and make informed decisions led by CDC and WHO guidance, you will be able to explore the world again and enjoy a much needed holiday.

Considering the Dominican Republic as a vacation destination is a fitting option with the multitude of outdoor activities, and a vast array of beaches and solo watersport activities available. Staying in socially-distant-friendly lodging, and reducing the need for long-distance international flights is another bonus.

We look forward to welcoming you again when the time is your right for your next vacation.

Best Caribbean Cocktails for Vacation

Are you missing the Caribbean and want to transport yourself to a sunny, sandy beach right about now?

The best way to indulge in the tropical vibe is to mix yourself an island cocktail. Imagine enjoying a delicious fruity cocktail under a palm shade on the beach in the Dominican Republic right now. Sound inviting? Try making one at home, or book your trip now to enjoy the real thing. Here are a few of our favorites (can also be prepared alcohol-free):

Piña Colada

The Piña Colada is one of the most famous cocktails in the world, reminiscent of an exotic, tropical, faraway beach. The name piña colada gets it's name from the principal ingredient, yellow pineapple juice.

This cocktail is the ultimate drink to enjoy when you arrive on a Caribbean beach. In the Dominican Republic, you can naturally find all the ingredients to make a delicious Piña Colada Cocktail – crushed fresh pineapple, coconut milk and, of course, Dominican rum. This cocktail is frothy, sweet and simply delicious!

The Mojito, a classic taste of the Caribbean, is an extremely refreshing cocktail. A combination of mint, lime, cane sugar, a slight measure of rum (recommended with Rum Anejo) and a splash of soda water. This fragrant cocktail originated in Havana, Cuba where it became famous when Ernest Hemingway adopted it as his signature cocktail.

In the Dominican Republic, mojitos are prepared with care, elevated to an art form by locals that have been creating unique and tasty variations. While in the Dominican Republic, you may also want to try a mojito prepared with fresh mango or chinola (passion fruit) juice for a unique twist on the classic.

Santo Libre

Santo Libre is the most traditional drink of the Dominican Republic as the name suggests. It was created in the capital city of Santo Domingo and it’s a reinterpretation of the Cuba Libre.

This rum-based cocktail is simple and freshly composed with white rum, Club Soda or Sprite, and fresh lime. This cocktail is appealing to sample different rum flavors, and potent alcohol content. A fresh Santo Libre is perfect for a night out dancing to Dominican salsa or merengue music.

Enjoy one of these island drinks and prepare for some fun in the Dominican Republic. ¡hasta pronto!

Certified health protocols that apply to airports, hotels, restaurants and bars are verified by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) 'Safe Travels' program, along with Bureau Veritas, both world leaders in the tourism sector.

“Our goal is to minimize the effects of the pandemic and facilitate a responsible recovery that prioritizes health" shared Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader.
